Simulator flight training comes with a wide variety of  classroom materials. These materials are an essential part of pilot training of any sort. The Syllabus and Briefings break the training into 9 tasks to be accomplished by the students including detailed instructions on the task and how to accomplish it. Briefings serve a two-fold purpose. The first is to improve student reading comprehension skills; and the second to provide an immediate source of information during simulator sessions when the instructor is unavailable. The briefings have been designed to  develop vocabulary skills and yet be simple enough for a sixth grade reading level. The tasks are practiced until the student shows sufficient proficiency in them, at which time a flight test is given by the instructor. When the task has been successfully completed, a  proficiency certificate is issued which becomes the student's logbook, detailing the task completed, and the signature of the instructor. Students typically need one semester, or 20 weeks to complete the first four tasks of the syllabus. The proficiency certificate is useful in developing confidence in the student, and also allows any outside or substitute instructor to know immediately where the student is in the syllabus.
