The Grand Opening of Flight Sim Lab 2

Over 2 years in the planning, Orville Wright Middle school's second flight simulator room was officially opened last month. Although the lab has been in use since last semester, very few have seen what must be a rare classroom. Here, 20 students at a time, advanced flight simulator classes will be conducted, 4 periods a day.

The new "Green Monsters" , my name for the computers in the room, are more powerful than the simulators in Lab 1, (red cases), allowing greater realism, and speed of animation in the simulation. Notice the dividers between each station, put there in the hope of keeping each pilot focused on their own world.  There is a nice flight planning table set up now and plenty of room. There is a great feeling of space in there, especially with the great mural painted there. We hope to have all the simulators networked together soon. This will enable the pilots to experience occupying the same airspace with their fellow pilots. The system will be capable of simulating air traffic control radar screens, having the capability of seeing all the simulated aircraft flown by other students in the room. I hope, if the funding becomes available, to include a simplified air traffic controller course for students. The persistence, skill and determination of many dedicated administrators allowed this room to be built. They believed in the vision of a new type of education and learning experience and here is the manifestation of that belief. Students generally love the rigorous training as they experience math, science, physics and geography in a way only a pilot can. Here are some other shots of the room, just click on them.   Flight Sim Pilot Home Page
